FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Washington County GOP County Committee Passes Resolution Opposing Water Fluoridation
The Washington County GOP County Committee passed a resolution opposing the addition of fluoride to public water supplies at the July 28th County Committee meeting.
The Resolution stated that adding fluoride to water constitutes a form of mass medication without individual consent or consideration for differing medical needs and exposure levels. It further cited scientific concerns about potential health effects, including risks to neurological development, thyroid function, and skeletal health.
The Resolution affirmed the Republican Party’s commitment to individual liberty, personal responsibility, and limited government intervention in personal health decisions. It also emphasized that alternative dental health approaches—such as topical fluoride treatments, improved dental care access, and education—provide effective options without forcing involuntary exposure.
Additionally, the Resolution noted that municipal governments bear the financial burden of maintaining fluoridation systems, diverting resources from essential infrastructure needs. It underscored that decisions about fluoridation should remain under local control, allowing communities to reflect the values and preferences of their residents.
The Resolution urges cities and municipalities to cease fluoridation practices and encourages voluntary dental health programs that respect personal choice. It also supports legislative efforts at the state and local levels to prohibit mandatory fluoridation, safeguarding both public health and individual freedom.
